A little while ago I bought a Yashica Mat TLR and have been wanting to use my electronic flash with it. After not being able to find much on the net I thought I would share what I have done which is actually very simple and cheap.

What you will need is a Hotshoe Adaptor and most likely a flash sync pc cable.

And that’s pretty much it… You just connect your flash to the hotshoe and the pc cable / extension to the Yashica (or which ever camera has a pc flash sync connection)

The pc extension cable in the link above is 5 meters which means you can then place your flash just about anywhere you may need it.

    Hi!

You seem to have some experience with flash photography with the Yashicamat. Can you please give some information on the usable shutter speeds? ie what is the fastest workable shutter speed when using a flash?

It should work at all sync speeds. This has something to do with the camera being completely mechanical I believe. Also the camera only goes up to 1/500 which is 1 stop slower than the “rated sync speed” for most DSLRs

I rarely go above 1/250 with the flash connected but have not had any problems with any of my images at whatever speed I have set.

I will take some test shots this weekend and post as soon as I have them developed to confirm this. The problem with film is you don’t have any EXIF data and I am not sure which ones I have that where taken at 1/500th :)
